I know what it isn't... what is it?

I've got a male betta in a heated, 1.5g tank. He's probably around 3 years old.

He developed a pea-sized lump in his tail... it sticks out both sides of the tail. It grew inside the tail fin, and then split through the skin when it got bigger and is brownish-fleshy colored. It doesn't bother him or seem to affect his swimming. I'm pretty sure it's a tumor of some sort.

He also very suddenly developed a large, round, bloated stomach, right behind his pelvic fins. It is approximately the size of a marble. It is NOT dropsy, bloat, or him just being fat. Scales don't stick out. He eats normally, swims around, still flares at things, and we've seen him poo and it looks normal. I haven't got the slightest clue what it is.

Any ideas on either?

Thanks, the one on the tail is definitely a tumor from the pics on that site. Still not sure about the bloated stomach, unless it's an internal tumor that just grew really fast.

Well, he finally died yesterday. He was eating up until the day before, and still flaring at things and swimming around. His big belly thing was fluid filled, not a solid mass like his tail (we poked, we did NOT cut it open). It was the size of a gumball, stuck on his stomach.

We're going to bleach the tank and decorations, and boil the rocks... I don't think it's contageious, but we really don't know.
