There was a post like this one a while agoe on fish profiles.com. I wouldnt recommend it though unless you take the right precautions. Stuff thats in your bones like excess calcium or some other stuff can leake out. So in short you might try to coat the entire thing with something safe, try another bone easier to coat, or take your chances. Ill try and find the article i was talkin bout but i think that answers your question.

If your tank water has an acid pH ie less than 7 then the scull will very very slowly dissolve releasing assorted things into the water....but I can't imagine it would be a problem.
I might boil it a bit....and give it a good soak in some water with a good squirt if dechlorinator to make sure the chlorine's gone... then go for it :)

we do deer head skull mounts like that, boil the head in a pot of water for about 20 minutes till the skill and meat loosens up, then take a high pressure hose <car wash> and blow everything off, make sure you get the skull cavities cleaned, the brain and all that goo inside the head has to come out ,, every little bit, then re boil the head in water with 40% peroxide gell <obtained from beauty supply store> it will be pure white, then spray some clear laqure to seal it off

doesn't the human body maintain as natural pH level of 5.5? If this is indeed the case, (and I imagine that a cat would be similar to a human) then slightly acid water would probably preserve the cat skull better than neutral (pH7) water....???

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong- I am no biologist.

I started a thread asking if I could put seashells in my tank, and after doing some more research I'm finding that the seashells will break down and add calcium to the water, raising the ph.

SO does anyone know of something clear that I could use to cover the shell(s) with that would keep it from breaking down?

Lightning - that clear spray laquer stuff...do you think that would screw with an aquarium water?

petsmart actually sells a skull with fangs, its called a jaguar head, it looks like an old cats skull, and comes in 2 different sizes, the small 4' one sells for 5 bucks and the large 8' sells for 9 bucks, the store by me sells out of them constantly you might try one of these instead of the real thing, im not sure about the clear coat being "safe' for the tank

Seriously... that's just gross... a cat skull... I would've tried to save the poor thing... but then again who would want to mess with dogs that attack a poor animal? Eww... I'd go with what lightning says about buying them from the store. That would mean it is definitely safe.
