I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!!!

#1
Hi all well it's official i've gone insane, borderline addiction to FISH !! thats right Fish lol, well last nite I came across a 125g tank and talked the guy down to 300$ i was in shock that he went that low, the tank itself is in near mint condition( he use to own a fish store ) and the stand is a very nice pine/oak so not a cheapie and then there is all the wet dry stuff
and skimmers and something that kills algae with light ?
i forget what it's called but it puts a beam of light into the water before it goes into the tank to kill the algae
and also it has decent light setup, 2 36inX4 flourecent
2 normal ? and 2 blue lights ?? I'm still very much a rookie and finally got my 55 gallon up and running great with Cichlids
but i just couldnt pass up a deal like that !!
so anyhoo the reason for the p ost is this, I want to take my time and set this up right i kinda rushed my 55 and it could look a bit better in my opinon (I'll post some pics soon)
First off It was a saltwater tank before so ill have to clean it somehow for freshwater, and im almost sure ill be putting cichlids in it but not sure what ones, I have 16 in my 55 7 labido cromis ranging from 1-2.5in and i have 1 3in poscotamous 2 psuedo tropheaus ? 2in and 6 peacocks 5 are mostly around the 3in range with one female that is about 4 in and one male that is 6in. I want to put big fish in this new tank tho so should i just keep what i have and put them in the 125g and then keep the 55 going and use it as a quarentine for the big tank ? so i dont end up putting one sick fish in it and killing off the rest of my fish. I really need help with the Design of it tho plants and rocks etc etc, I can get some lace rock here in town from a guy for 34cents a pound so thats cheap and its nice stuff too, I have some in my 55 that looks nice. I realllllllllllllly want to make this tank look nice ! so i'm willing to take a longtime to get this done right.
Look fwd to seeing lot's of replies to this. I'd love to see lots of pics too for ideas, post them here or email them to me thanks again everyone  !!!

Re: I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!

Rd,

Congrats on the purchase.  Sounds like you're going to be having a lot of fun.

The thing that kills algae with light is a UV sterilizer.  It uses Ultraviolet light to kill micro-organisms and free floating algae.

The Skimmer that came with it probably won't be useful in a freshwater tank, so don't worry about using it.

It sounds as if your 55 will become over-stocked.  Once those fish grow to their full potential (4-5") your 55 will definately be over-stocked.  You may want to consider separating your Peackcocks from the Mbuna.  The Mbuna will probably take over the tank (if the haven't already done so) and bully the Peacocks.

A suggestion may be to move whichever Cichlids you perfer (Mbuna or Peacocks) into the 125 and keep the remaining fish in the 55.

Good Luck

I'm not sure what i want to do with the new one, I'd like to put atleast some Java fern in it, however i have a small clump in the 55 because i was told that java fern is the only plant that cichlids wont bother, and for the most part that's true
O this tank also has some sort of oxyogen compressor ?
i live outside of Denver Colorado so i'm at 5000+ feet above sea level, so if i seperate the Mbuna from the peacocks what should go into the big tank ? and can i get any other bigger fish? i kinda like the look of the Fontosa's

I would save money by making a rockwork out of styrofoam for african cichlids.  It will comprised by numerous caves and hiding places.

Dry fit your tank first off. Collect the rock for your caves, driftwood, substrate, and whatever else you are going to use. put your substrate in and form your rocks into the caves or formations you want and silicone them together. place your driftwood and other material. then fill'er up.  Even take some time and visualize what you want, look at lots of pics, see what you like and dislike. Keep moving stuff around until you like what you see, then add your water.  And if all else fails, send it too me and ill find a use for it, hahaha :D

You really think i need to silicone them ?
and what's this styrofoam u speak of dattack ?
isnt that toxic and how do u get shapes that u can make caves out of etc etc, I thought about maybe using pvc pipe and laying rocks around it somehow so u can't see the pvc

Re: I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!

If you want to get Frontosa, it would probably be compatible with both Mbuna and the Peacocks.  Your Mbuna are herbivores, but your Peacocks are probably Omnivores or Micro-predators (don't think you said what types of Peacocks you had).

This means the Frontosa would be more compatible with your Peacocks from a diet perspective.

Even though your tank is big, you may not want to get more than one Frontosa.  Or get a bunch of small ones and trade them back to the pet store when they get larger (or even try to keep a pair).

Re: I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!

You dont have to silicone them together. It just helps to stablize the rocks so that they dont fall over and crush the fish. I have siliconed them in the past, it helps create some cool formations that may not otherwise stay still. Right now none of mine are siliconed. Its really personal opionion.
Thanks Dattack, those links are sooo cool.... *thumbsup2*

Re: I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!

I think what i'm going to do is put the peacocks in the 125 and keep the mbuna in the 55 and get rid of a few labido chromis , I have 7 of those not sure how many are female/male but if i was to get rid of some of them
how many should i keep ?
I'd like to introduce one more type of fish in there
so i'd have the 2 psueodo tropheous and labido cromis and ? some other type, what does everyone recommend ?
thanks again for every one's replies !!

Re: I need some Design Help for my new 125g plz !!

I saw a few imitation backgrounds from my local petsmart.  But the real McCoy is called "back to nature" which I believe is mainly in europe.

Maybe you can ask clothahump about them.
