I will be turning 15 in about a week and for my birthday, i want to get a new fish tank. I want a tank that is bigger than my current 10 gallon. I'm thinking of a 30 gallon and im going to put the fish from that tank in there. Does anyone know about how much a 30 gal. w/stand and hood would cost and how much a filter and heater would cost. Also, I want to put sand in this aquarium. What kind of sand should i buy? Just sandbox sand or what? Oh and also any ideas for fish? or decorations?

Thanks alot

(This should probably be moved to another forum besides bottom feeders)

YAY! 30 gallon is a good size, have fun with it! I would look in the newspaper classifieds and at garage sales. I don't like buying stuff new because its just so dang expensive. I'd rather get a used tank and be able to spend more money on the stuff that goes INSIDE. I got a 15 G with a stand at a garage sale for 18 dollars. I suppose if I was looking for a 30 and a stand I would probably pay 50 dollars depending on how good everything looked. The other option would be to find a used tank and then get the stand from petsmart because their stands are pretty reasonable.

Heater would cost between 15-30 depending on how good quality you get. I think you need a 100W for a 30 Gallon tank (someone correct me if thats wrong)

Filter would cost about 30 -? depending on the type/brand you want. I think the run of the mill power, hang on the back filters that do 300 gallons per hour are probably around 30-40 dollars...but you might want to upgrade that, totally up to you.

Don't know much about sand, I'm going to put some in my newest tank. but from what i've heard/read/had suggested to me sand from home depot...just normal play sand works just fine.

As for fish...totally depends what you like and whats available to you. You could have a great community tank with maybe some mollies and swordtails, a couple of bottom feeders, some danios, some tetras. Or a 30 would be big enough to put an angelfish and a school of smallish type fish (not neons) and a bottom feeder.

I'm jealous :) have fun!

I would get a 35 gallon, they are the same base as the 30 but taller, IME the 30 gallons are too short, yes it will add to the price but is worth it IMO, the other thing you should do is check teh classified ads every day, goto garage sales as often as possible and goto flea markets looking for fisht anks and equipment

Also, walmart has 29 gallon kits, might be another option. I dont know how much they are (I look at the 55's hoping they come down in price a bit more). They probably have everything but a heater.

WalMart has 29 gal aquarium kits for $89. Comes with a hood and flourescent lights, heater, PowerFilter, net, and water conditioner. All in all not a bad deal but I do not know how reliable the heater/filter would be they are probably just standard. If you decide to go this way I would definately upgrade the filter, especially since you will be getting more fish to go in there.

Definately check out the classifieds and even eBay you can luck up and get a really sweet deal. And, oh yeah, Happy (early) Birthday!

Hey thanks for your input.
2 more days!
I found a really nice 37 gallon at one of my LFS it's a bit expensive but i dont think it's that bad. I want something that will last me awhile. It's $200 for the tank, stand, and hood. Will someone tell me what kind of filter i should go with? I dont know much about them. And also, anyone with previous experience with sand in the aquariums please tell me all you know about it. I LOVE the look of it. And should i only have 1 heater or 2? I've seen tanks like that with 2 heaters, but im not sure. For fishies, i dont want any mollies or swordtails, nothing that will bring more fish. I have a tiger barb and a gold barb which wouldn't like the idea of me having any fish like that. Any other suggestions?

Thanks a TON
