My newest goldie has ich! I didn't quarantine him long enough. I just googled ich and found out that it has a longer life cycle in colder temps (shoulda known-- errgh! ignorance kills!) I have goldies, white cloud mtn minnows, and a dojo loach in there. So far I've found info that says to raise the temp to 90 for 24 hours, then back down to 78 for 48, then back up to 90 for 24, and so on for two weeks whilst adding some aq salt. But I have a loach. How much salt can he tolerate????
I don't want to use the QuIckCure if not necessary. I can put jr. in a 2gal tank for treatment.
Hubby is coming to pick me up for a night out in a short while, and of course the ich has to be treated right away.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I put jr in the 2gal tank with salt

I stuffed a piece of bio-bag (filter media) in the air tube around the air tubing above the airstone. (It has a little undergravel filter.) I put in a little gravel from one of the established tanks in the bottom of the tank. I added a tsp of aq salt. The light bulb will keep the temp around 88 degrees.
I haven't begun treatment of the main tank. I'm observing the others for signs of ich. I suppose there's no way of avoiding it. But I need to know about the weather loach in regard to treating ich. Haven't found much info about that yet.
Here's hoping.

Keep a close eye on the main tank. if it crops up there, I would still use the salt treatment - crank the temp up to 84, add one heaping tbs/5 gallons and maintain that level until one week past any sign of ich. Loaches can also be sensitive to medications and some can disrupt your biological filter. IMO the salt is a safer option. Good luck!

Well,

based on the info from many gold fish only boards, since dojos do well with the goldies and you have to treat the main tank, I would asume they can handle it just fine.

Do you have gravel? You are going to want to do frequent water changes with a gravel vac, sucking up the pods that hide in the soil. Better to do as much preventive now than wait for a whole tank outbreak. .1% ratio is = one teaspoon per gallon. You will get different opinions, but 1 tsp per gallon does not equal 1 tbl per 5 gallons. So if you want a .3% you have to use one tbs per gallon put in over 2-3 days.

Here are links to salt dips as well
