I have a cichlid who is rubbing on the gravel on the bottom of the tank. I don't see anything physically wrong with him and he is eating just fine. I don't know what breed of cichlid he is for sure either. I am new to keeping cichlids and have not had luck with them in the past. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does he have what looks like little grains of salt or sugar on him? PArticularly on the fins? If so he has Ich. DO a search on it. IT is really common and easy to treat. Lots of methods, salt and heat method is the best.

no there are no physical symptoms other than the bumping the bottom of the aquarium. He isn't rubbing on anything else either just the gravel.

Are you sure it's not digging a pit, or tring to move the gravel around? Many cichlids dig pits as part of breeding, and some males do not need a female present to show off like this.

my female convicts seem to like rubbing up on things also. i dont see it with the males. i dont know why they do it, there doesnt seem to be anything up with them either, the one has been doing it since it was a feeder.
