OK u kno the whisper, emperor, penguin type catridges that slid in and out. Now i know some ppl just rinse and reuse the catridge and dump out the carbon thats inside after some time cuz or else it just leaches back into the tank..Well my idea is that u remove the carbon when used up and replace with like biomax in the middle so ur optimizing that area where the carbon should be...Comments?

another idea kinda not thought out but if u just rinse off the really dirty clogged side, i think u can flip it around and keep the other sides bacteria...

Makes sense to me. I think you can refill those rascals with just about anything. I'm going to take the carbon out of mine and try refilling it with peat.

I've rinsed off the surface crud and reversed them . . . thinking the same as you . . .and it seemed to work out fine.

it's a fine idea except that you would need some kind of way to prevent cloging of the biomedia.if you use ceramic rings and what not no biggie but if you like the more high end bio-media like eheim substrat or cellpore it would clog soon.the best filters for something like this would be the penguin 330,either emperors or any of the aquaclears.the aquaclears being an easy choice because of the fact that it collects most crud at the bottom sponge.i have done this before actualy using a cellpore insert in my emperor 400.the only thing i didn't like was that it cloged quick.not cloged to the point of unuseable though.
