Soon I will be moveing the fish from my 55 Gal. to a new 100 Gal. When the 55 is empty I thought about getting some kribs. I would like a pair to try for fry.

So what else would be good to mix with Kribs in the Cichlid family?

2 kribs then...

I know they are a bit shy(the kribs). But are we talkn ONLY the pair in the whole 55 gal.? Or if I was to put some thing else...just nothing aggressive? What about key hole cichlids?

Well there's a bunch of small non aggressive cichlids you can try, and you can always go for more than one pair. Do you want to stick to W Africans, or are you prepared to mix in SA cichlids? But nothing is guaranteed to work, and you have to be prepared to take them out. At the end of the day you either want to breed them or have a community, and one doesn't necassarily equal the other.

Kribs are not very aggressive at all. If you put 2 in a 55gallon they will be fine. I have kept many kribs before and never had problems with them being overly aggressive in a big tank. Now if you were going to put them in a 10 or 20gallon with other fish like angels or gouramis then you might have a problem.

Kribs go best with other small fish like tetras, dainos, or rasboras. Not sure what other cichlids would go good with them. You could try some of the easier to keep apistos like cacatuoides. Keyholes might be ok but I have never kept this fish so I wouldn't know. The kribs will protect their fry though. Really that is the only time they are aggressive.

I would like a pair to try for fry.
Trust me on this. You will not have to try very hard. Providing that you get a male and a female they will probably pair up and breed very quickly. I had a pair in a 20gallon community tank and I couldn't keep the little buggers from digging holes underneath my drift wood or rocks. Eventually, I moved the whole community to another tank and just let them do their thing. Within a couple days they made a new hole and layed several eggs. Within a week I had several fry swimming around merily. Very rewarding to say the least.

Hmmm

Maybe I'll just start with a pair of kribs. Let go for a bit...see if I get fry.

Then I could get something else in the Cichlid family later. I would shoot for something with equal size and a NON-aggressive type.

Just allways thought the Kribs were very pretty. :) I have heard that if you put other fish in with them that bully them around, they stay to nerveous to have fry. So it's good that you say it came easy for you Bigfoot.

Well what ever I do I'll take pics. and share:) Thanks!

well your picture shows that you have a female.;)

Males are actually less colourful, but have more elongated and pointed dorsal and anal fins;), the males do not have the purple belly, only the females do

Well really it was a rhetorical question. Since ladyhawk was planning on getting some and considering she wanted to get a male and female I just wanted to make sure she new the difference.

You guys are correct though. Female are generally more colorful. Males can get really colorful though when they are wooing a female. However, when the females are really into it they almost turn a different color. The in that pic of mine will get a belly so deep purple it almost looks like she was bruised. Her dorsal fin also gets some of the most intense orange I have ever seen in nature. Almost make me want to go out and get her a guy.

Got 2

So I went and got 1 male and 1 female today:)

I only have a 10 gal. for the *Q* time. Didn't want to over do it. I might add another couple later.

I think I got it right. The one I think is female has some yellow on rounder fins. The one I think is male is duller in color but has pointer fins.;)

I'll post some pics once they are setteled in.

Thanks guys:)
