I just acquired some cichlids in a large tank and the lady I bought them off doesn't what they are apart from they're African. I've been on the web sites and I can't seem to identify most of them. I have one really large fish that's the boss of the tank and likes to be on his own. He's got a round body, really large fins that are slightly frilly, a blunt shaped nose and he's blue and white. He's not got blue stripes but it's more like it's just patterned all over him. He's my favourite one in the tank. I also have 2 that at the moment are a brown colour with dark stripes down they're elongated body, dark small fins and a greyish head. The lady said when they're older the fins will get darker and they're head will be a cobalt blue. It doesn't help to identify them when they're going to be changing colour. Anybody got any ideas?

It will be very difficult to ID the fish without a picture.

Look around on the profiles and see if you see any cichlids that look similar to the ones you have. Even if it doesn't look exactly the same, some of the features may be helpfull in IDing them.

okay I borrowed a digi cam from my friend so now I have some pics. I was thinking the yellow one was either an Orange Lalupi or a Red Zebra. He's really friendly and always comes up to the glass to say hi. The Blue one with the stripes i was thinking might be a Demeson. He's really shy. The brown one I have 2 of and their fins will get darker and they'll get a Cobalt Blue head. The big Blue and White one that's the boss of my tank I'm totally stumped on, I can't find anything remotely like him so I hope you guys can help.

#2 is a tropheus, #3 is not a lelupi. #4 may be a type of peacock. I have no idea what the last one is, but with that fin shape, I'm sure someone will be able to head you on the right direction.

Your on the right road anyway ;)

(In the order of the pictures from top to bottem)

#1 - Hard to say, Definently a Mbuna of Lake Malawi. Possibly a mix? Looks to have the head feature of a Labeotropheus?
#2 - Again, definently a Mbuna, though species i am not sure yet. At first glance, a strain of Cynotilapia afra. Could even be a Pseudotropheus demasoni?
#3 - Metriaclima estherae (I believe its P. estherae now but either name works) Aka Red or Orange Zebra.
#4 - Looks like a general OB Peacock to me. Exact species in the mix i don't know.

EDIT: Another glance and #2 could also be a Pseudotropheus elongatus (Pseudotropheus sp. "elongatus")

(Oh yeah! This just came to me after looking at my avatar: Does he look like that?)

(#3) I agree! Is he starting to get little red teeth? If he's a male & it looks like he is (large egg-spot), WATCH OUT! If he's anything like mine, he'll grow up to be an A-HOLE!!! He may start to give the one whom you say is "the boss of the tank" a run for his money.

Can't really put in my two cents for the others 'cause I have no idea except that the last pic (fish.jpgdefinately appears to be some sort of Peacock to me.
