Good question, Katie.
From a bioload standpoint, it would probably be okay. I'd say the big question will be whether or not Meaty will tolerate the sev as a tankmate. Then again, you could always introduce the sev to the tank first and then have Meaty be the 'newcomer'...might make things go a little smoother.

But really I've got no firsthand experience with severums, so maybe someone else could be of more help when it comes to giving advice on that issue.

Yeah true. Now that I think about it, I want Meaty to be the only cichlid in there.
BUT that actually brings me to something else, could I put a school of say...danios for Meaty to chase?

If it were me, I'd just keep Meaty in there by himself.
The idea of having dithers for an oscar to chase around and liven up the tank is great---I very much enjoyed watching Triton's interactions with the tiger barbs I had in there---but in reality it will probably lead to problems (which is why I removed the tiger barbs).

I doubt that the danios would harass Meaty or do damage to him directly, but I can just envision him chasing them around and then injuring himself on something in the tank. Even if the setup is 'oscar-safe' he could still slam right into the walls of the tank and hurt his jaw, etc.

Of course, all of this still leaves you with the question of where to keep your severum.
I agree with SK in that having the sev in with the oscar in a 75 gal. tank might be pushing it, so I would never recommend that someone house them together like that unless they already had the sev and no suitable place to keep it. Yours is probably outgrowing the 33 gal. tank, eh?

Yeah I figure buying the severum in the first place, and thinking he could live his life in the 33gal was a bad choice on my part. But I've grown attached to him and want to give him the best possible home...with me.

Now that I think of it BV, you're right. Meaty is clumsy and I bet he'd hurt himself chasing the giant danios.

I'm so exicted now, Meaty is going to look so small in the 75!! A whole extra foot of swimming room...he's gonna love it!!

Ok so I cant get the 75gal today because the LFS just sold their last one. So they dont know when they will be getting in another 75gal... and they even called all the other stores around and no one has one. SO right now I have Meaty in a divided part of my 33gal. The LFS said they could expect a 75gal by the end of the month...so beginning of November. Will Meaty be ok in the divided 33gal until then? Or should I just go out and buy a 55gal (to make the 55gal his permanent home...I'm not upgrading again...I'd rather just wait the few weeks till november)
I plan on two 40% water changes a week to keep water in check too.

I say hold out. bigger and better. and eventually, when meaty has lived his looooong full and wonderful life (i dont think bringing it up is sad or inappropriate... apologies if you do), you'll have much bigger digs for whatever comes next. How long to Oscars live, anyhow?

True enough, I'll wait.

Oscars have been reported to live for 15 years!!

BTW - Meaty seems to be...enjoying the upgrade from the 20, to the 33. He has proceeded to attack the divider to get to my severum and bolivian rams...so basically heres whats happened.
The tank was divided 50/50. Now its about 75/25 because Meaty has pushed the divider so far LOL!! He's prob gonna hurt himself...
