Hi All

I have been keeping a close eye on my fish and I'm not sure if there's a desease or not? It seems that on some of my fish, as if the tips of them is white. They all still seem to be quite happy around there. Is it just the light reflection?

Any info is appreciated.

Hi Limi
Let me try to explain better. If you look at your avatar, where the black is on the fins, there's like a fine white line where the fin ends (kinda all along the fin) Does that help?

Please have a look at the pic

Tony

It's not his/her Mono - he/she just copied my avatar as an example :) . I THINK. I was assuming it was a Bala Shark. Your comment seems right on about the fin regrowth.

*twirlysmi BalaShark is a he, and yes, I copied your avatar for an example:)
Regarding the white line on the fins, it's not with all, but about 1/2 of my fish. Hm, so looks like I have no real need for worries then, the little buggers are just growing*twirlysmi

I'll keep an eye on them in anycase, and thank you all for your replies!

Although Lotus and Limi said growing I think they meant "repair".If all or most of your fish have this I would watch them carefully and try to find a cause, such as something they're scraping against. It could be water conditions aswell.

Yes, I agree with TLH - I did mean 'repair' as in the fins were damaged, either by nipping from another fish or against gravel/decorations, and now they might be growing back. My Angel fish had the same thing when I bought him because his fins were nipped.

What size is your tank and what other kinds of fish do you have?

I would definitely keep an eye on them and if it looks to be getting worse, it's possible it could be fin rot.

What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)?

Here's some info on the tank: 29g's, all the plants are real and here's what's swimming around
Redeye Tetra (2)
Black Skirt Tetra (2)
Red tail black shark (1)
Bala Shark (1)
Common Pleco (1)
Neon Tetra (2)
Molly (2)
Boesemani Rainbowfish (2)
Guppy (4)
Serpae Tetra (5)
Cory Catfish (1)
Bamboo Shrimp (1)
Cory Albino (2)

Here's a link to a pic of my Tank
I have recently replaced the "rock formations" with a piece of coral and the plants have grown quite a bit as well in the last month or so.
The water is tested once a week, and all looks just dainty and fine, but for specific #'s, I'll test again tonight and post the #'s

Did this start after the coral was added by any chance? Most coral is quite sharp when it's just the dead skeleton which is what I take it you have.
I could not really say, honestly It's not real coral, but the fake stuff from PetSmart (kind of soft). It looks something like this My Tank

Here are my water parameters:
pH - 7 (Good)
Alkanity(ppm) - 160 (Ideal ange)
Hardness(ppm) - 230 (Hard)
Ni - 0 (Safe)
Na - 20 (Safe)
NH3 - 0.1 (Safe)

I was reading up on the fin rot disease today and it looks lik stress, bad water conditions and over-feeding are the main causes. Now the water is fine, the fish look happy, could I be over-feeding them?

I am not saying this is right, but this is what I would probably do: Water change and gravel vac, add stress coat, cut back on feeding for a little while and just observe. If it looks like the fins are getting worse after this, there are fin rot medications....can't recommend any, I've never had to use.

In your first post you said 'some of your fish' have this problem. I was assuming it was the Bala Shark (from your avatar, I guess) but I noticed you only have 1. Which fish exactly is this affecting?

It also seems to me that you have a lot of fish in that 29gal......could be stress due to overcrowding? Or nipping going on.

Good morning and back again!
Some feedback. I do a water change/gravel vac every 2 weeks The fish that I saw last night with the fin "problem" are
Red tail black shark, Rainbowfish, Guppy, Serpae Tetra. The Bala Shark has no symptoms at all. First I thought that the Red tail black shark was the culprit (he/she is a big grouch and bully at time) the also shows the same signs.
You also mentioned a lot of fish in the tank. Every one is still small (the biggest is the Pleco, 2inches) and some of the fish will move to another tank once it has been cycled in 4 weeks or so.
