I'm not sure if you've ever had playsand as a substrate before so I'll just warn you. Playsand is a nice cheap way to make your aquarium look unique, but there is a downside to it. It shows debris no matter how much you clean it. It also takes a while to settle when doing setup, cleaning, and water changes. I rinsed my playsand about 20 times per half bag and still have problems with it getting stired up. I would recommend using Eco-Complete or a similar substrate if you're looking for a soft bottom. For a 10 gallon tank, 1 20lb bag of Eco-Complete is enough. The cost is around $20 and it doesn't show debris nearly as bad as playsand.

well it sounds like a pretty good start, a nice male would look great. i think you should go with the cardinals, the blues would really compliment the rams colour. the ram may get annoyed with cories, as they occupy the same area of the tank as he will (the bottom) but i guess you could give it a go if you wanted.
