im somewhat new to this, i have a 20g and a 10 g running smoothly, but no experience in a larger tank.

i have a 125 gallon tank, what type of setup will i need for a lightly planted freshwater tank? (heaters, lights, pump, substrate, the sort)

Welcome to the site :)

For the equipment you'll need:
- Heaters - around 2-3 watts per gallon, so probably two x 300 watt heaters
- Filters - probably two large canister filters, and possibly an additional HOB filter.
- Lighting - 1.5 to 3 watts per gallon of fluorescent or compact fluorescent lighting, with the bulbs in the range of 5,000K to 10,000K (with 6700K being most commonly used for planted tanks).
- Substrate - Fluorite and Eco-Complete are the most commonly recommended for sucessful planted tanks.

If you can give us the dimensions of the tank, it would help give advice on specific lights and how many pounds of substrate, etc.

I have a Rena Filstar xP2 (they go to xP4) canister filter and it is the easiest to use and quietest filter I have ever been associated with (then again previously I used only HOB's). I have a compact flourecent light made by Catfish Lighting. They are relatively new on the aquatics scene and can be had cheaper than most.

dimensions:

72 inches long, 26 inches tall, 18 inches wide

36 inches down (lengthwise down the tank) there is crossbar on the top frame. it looks like i could take two 55gal tank hoods and put it on.

so whats the MFT community suggestion for hoods and lights? im looking for a lightly planted tank
and how much substrate?

could anyone point me in the direction of finding some hoods with lampfixtures for this size tank? or is DIY a better plan?

also...would that be 150 gallons instead of 125? im really not sure...the guy i got it from didnt know anything about it
