Wow! That was quite shocking to read. I have a red-tailed shark and I look at him in a different light now. I'd read that they were bred in Thailand using hormones, they're notoriously difficult to breed in captivity so to hear that they're extinct in the wild now is terrible news but somewhat understandable - they're so intolerant of their own species!!
Generally I find there is little to no information being offered in the general trade though the internet dealers are more forthcoming BUT they're more informative because they trade in the wild-caughts at a premium price.
Collectors seem to want wild caught Tanganyikans as much for more natural behavioural characteristics as their colours.
Personally, I've never sought wild caughts.
