Is a glass top needed if you have a canopy?

I am going to get a 50 gallon tank and build a stand and a canopy for it. Is it necessary to have a glass top on it besides, or is the hood fine? I will probably mount a light fixture to the underside of it.

If your going to have a canopy over it then yes I would. This is going to cut down on the amount of moisture that's going to be hitting at the wood, and it's going to help cut down on any moisture from gathering on any electrical parts in the light, or having any fish splash water directly on the lamps or lighting components.
