wet/dry filters and trickle filters are considered somewhat outdated technology within the saltwater world. The best filters are live rock and live sand and protein skimmers.....not sure what size set up you are looking at but usually a wetdry with bioballs eventually leads to high nitrates farther down the road.....tell us more of what your intentions are

I want lots of everything fish and coral. I plan on getting alot of LR and LS and a protien skimmer, but i dont like the look of HOT skimmers. Can i just use a self-powered skimmer that can sit under the tank ? Or is it better to set up a sump/refug. with a skimmer built in ? Its a 75gal.
Id really like to build/buy 1 filtration unit under the tank, with just powerheads in the tank.

Yes, just have a sump rather than a wetdry and put all the junk in there, as you desire. Plus you get to use better, cheaper skimmers in sumps as you don't need to make the design compromises HOB's have.
