I just went to a few pet shops today and this is what I found:

2.5 gallon Hex w/ filters, fake plants, no heater for $20 CDN (No Brand)

5 gallon (glass) w/ eveything except heater for $55 CDN (Marina?)

10 Gallon with only canopy and filter for $45 CDN (Marina?) (Iffy with my parents.)

Which is more worth it?

i would say the 10 gallon is prob the best bet, the filter it comes with is it under gravel filter?

the only other thing you would need for the 10 gallon is heater, air pump and air line, air stone, gravel

bigger is always better for fish tanks, so get the largest one you can afford(both in money and space)

I agree with the last post - always get the biggest tank you can - it not only makes maintenance easier, it widens out your choices of fish stocking for the present - and also for the future.

If your parents are a bit iffy about it - tell them it gives you a chance to get used to responsibility - which is quite true (so don't let them down - lol)

Okay, #1: THey won't believe me, even after at least 5 years of trying to let me get any sort of pet.

#2: When I went back to the store, they had NO 5 OR 10 GALLONS LEFT! I went with the 2.5 gallon and hopefully, will upgrade to something bigger soon. The 2.5 isn't actually all that bad. From HAGEN, with pump and under gravel filter. After all, It was only $20 CDN...

What unique fish would you advise I put in this tank? (other than bettas). Maybe a small Cichild?

Are Puffers (dwarf) still VERY iffy with a 2.5, even with lights, heater and filter?

well go with very very very small fish. Or one SINGULAR dwarf puffer.

Cardinal tetras maybe, or dwarf corries? I really can't think of any cichlid that would be happy in a 2.5gal. I once kept a pair of kribs in a 5gal but they were terrified of coming out of their coconut shell; had to be moved to my planted tank.
