I have a 55 gallon tank and i have i believe 5 jack dempsys, 1 texas cichlid, 2 red-belly pacus, and 2 plecos. One of the plecos stays small though and im not sure what kind it is. Is my tank over stocked? if it is what should i do about it.

Go ahead and get rid of some......

when these fish get older you could offer your tank as fight night at the MGM Grand in vegas.

Get some out if thats what you have in there. All of these fish get BIG and MEAN as they get older.

The most of any of those fish i'd keep in a 55 are 2 JackDempsy's, or 2 Texas's both of them having to be pairs.

But NO do not keep this setup long or like i said.....You will have Fight night at the MGM Grand in your tank.

Well it all depends like Fishysmell said, the size of the fish makes a big difference. As well some species require more room than others. For example your jd's probably require a lot of room, as well as the Pacu. I'm quite sure that they need at least a 55g tank to be comfortable. Most others on this site probably wouldn't stock their tank as much as u did, but every does things differently so if your fish seem to be ok and don't look stressed then u should be ok FOR NOW. You will need a bigger tank sooner than later however.

it's pretty safe to say yea your overstocked, and if the fish are small then you will be overstocked soon enough.pacus can grow to 3 feet and they are a round bodied fish so that means one BIG fish.jd's and texas chiclids both grow to a size that allows only one or two fish of this size in a 55 gallon tank and thats being very brave in terms of mantaining good water quality.

I seen a Pacu at the LFS today and he was HUGE. I would say he was definitely over a foot and not very old. I couldn't image him being in a 55g tank with the other fish you mentioned.

Get a new tank (always a good idea :p ) or sell/trade them in.

my 55 gallon has 1 JD, 1 Convict, 2 Plecos and a Gold Gourami, they all seem to do fine(when the plecos get too big, ill sell them back to the lfs, turns out they have orders for big plecos all the time so it shouldnt be a problem:D maybe i can lasso a fancy pleco for the two of them:D

to keep all of those fish you would need a 150+gal tank, and pacus will grow to over a foot long, so i would get rid of some.

I once went to a zoo with a Amazon exibit. Most of the fish were pacu....Oh and they were the size of a small TIRE.

If I were you I would start all over and give your pacu back to the lfs before they become to big. Many people buy pacu and keep them until they simply out grow their tanks, thinking that they can easely give them to a public aquarium or zoo, but these places most of the time have taken in all they can and turn people away, leaving them stuck with their pacu.
