ok i know this isnt REALLY about cichlids, but it sorta is...well anyways
a good fish friend of mine is selling his 56gal tank, comes with
56gal tank
hood,
stand (he said the tank hangs over about half an inch...so im not too sure bout the stand...)
lights
heater
fluval 305 filter
and he said that i could have the crushed coral substrate, and the cichlids he has in it if i want (yellow labs, assorted mbunas)
and this is all for about 250 (canadian) soo what do ya think? good deal or no?

I agree sounds like a good deal as long as everything is in pretty good condition. Look carefully at the tank on any edge that is off of the stand at all...that is scary. Most stands are made to even out the distribution of weight, so the rim of the tank should be hitting the stand in all areas evenly. If the glass is sitting on the stand then that is very bad. You might take a look around and see what a stand would cost that actually fits the tank (or heck maybe he doesn't have the tank on the stand right or something?)

Hey you know your parents better than us. Would sucking up work? Do you have any chores or homework that need to be done? I know when I was still living at home if I was going to ask something that I was afraid the answer was going to be no they always asked a) did you do X chore that i had been putting off b) did you finish all of your homework and then if I could answer YES to both it put me in a better light. THEN depending on what I was asking I had to anticipate their questions, whats it going to cost, where are you going to get the money, where is it going to go, do you know how to take care of it or use it, did you do your research on it. Of course they always came up with something in addition...but at least if they knew I put a lot of thought into it before asking them it wasn't a spur of the moment thing and at least i cared enough to consider it.

Am I wrong to ask how old you are that you have to ask your parents? IMO if I would have had to ask my parents becuase I didn't have money then the $200 CAD would have been to much for them to just fork over. (I would suggest finding a way to pay them back or pay for part of it. Fall cleaning maybe) However, I work now and bla bla bla, I just live at home for the moment and the problem my parents have with the tank is humidity, since I have it in the basement (which is pretty much like my own apartment) So once I get a dehumidifier I don't see them caring much.

im 14 (15 IN 2 DAYS!!! YAY) but i will be paying for it with my own money, my hard earned money that i got working for my dad as his secretary in the summer (hes a chiropractor) the only issue is...where to put it...i think i will put it where my 10gal is then move the 10gal across the basement or something...I WILL GET THIS TANK IF ITS THE LAST THING I DO! but seriously, i think they will say yes because today when i talked to my mom about it, i showed her the mbunas that i want, and she said "wow those are really nice, they would look great in the house!" soo...well thats a good sign! and on monday i think, im going to my friends house (timmy) to have a look at the tank, and make sure all is well (and look at his 75 and 33gal tanks too :D)

katie keep in mind cash talks if your parents say yes. make sure you offer the guy less money for what he is offering you. Depending on why he needs to get rid of the tank will help in your price. I got my 125gal years ago because a guy was moving to CA and didnt want to ship it. I already had a 100gal so I wasnt that concerned about getting another tank. he basically sold me the tank for 100 less than he said the first time because he just wanted to get rid of it.

OHH trust me, there will be pics! and TONES that is if i get it (which i thnk i will because of what my mom said)
but it was funny last night, my dad usually doesnt lke the fact that i ACTUALLY have a hobby (unlike him hehe) and i enjoy fish, but so he goes up to my 20gal in the living room, and he says "here fishy fishy fishy, Katie! they look hungry!" (i have danios in there :p so of course they look hungry!!) then he feeds them and continues watching the tank for 10+ mins, so imagine him with a 56gal tank! haha im excited

timmy (my friend) also workes at the LFS i go to to get the magority of my fish/supplies, and he said that he can special order in the mbunas that i want too! yay!
but a question...how am i supposed to put water in this thing? if i use the hose from outside, it will be SUPER cold, and wouldnt that damage the bacteria in the already established filter and substrate? or should i use the hose, but also just take REALLY hot water from teh tap and put it in too? i need ideas for filling this thing
