in my 30 gal tank there are 2 jd's....i know they need to be in a bigger tank, but $ is tight right now. my male is about 4-5 inches, and the female smaller than that. ive had them for about 3 months, and have regularly fed them cichlid pellets and/or frozen bloodworms, my question is this...is it possible to feed them feederfish? if so what should i use, something relatively inexpensive, and is it okay to use the flash when i take pics of my fishtanks? thanks for any help.

Photography And Feeder-Fish

I myself had questions and posted about photographing fish. I got many helpful replies, which can be found here.

There is a lot of controversy concerning feeder-fish. I personally have never used them or had any experience with them. However, since they are kept in tiny tanks with little concern for their well-being, sick and diseased feeder-fish are sometimes bought. They can transfer illnesses to your own fish. A way around this is to give the feeder-fish salt baths before use, to kill any would-be problems.

But once again, I have never used them. Hopefully someone can be of more help on this issue. And the reference to that post should help with your questions on photography.

lotus you are sooo right :) so im guessing feeder fish is an unsafe way to go. does anyone know why my male is normal colored til it seems like someone gets into his territory, then he turns almost jet black with dark brown horizontal stripes with red tips on his dorsal, and beautiful blue around the gills and back fin?
then he stays like that for awhile. whats the cause of this, my female doesnt do that

You can feed feeder but not necessary. If u want u can gv them occational mollies. I'd not advice giveing feeder gold for 2 reasons. Firstly they posses the big threat of parasites and secondly they are very rich in fat which is unhealthy for fish.
I'd say all large cichlids can do fine with pellets, sticks & frozen food.
