Turns out Jack is less of a he fish, and more of a she fish. After nursing hi ... her back from death a couple of times, she left a large deposit of eggs today in the calm side of our 60 gal tank. It's the first time I've seen a larger fish do this, she is about 3.5" in length. I had been worried as he was becoming very fat, and quite territorial to a blood parrot we have in the tank that is about half her size. But now I believe I also understand why she is a darker color, and why her color fluctuates occasionally.
Being a Cichlid I've read that many will eat the eggs after a couple of days if they are not fertilized, our blood parrot in the tank with her is still a juvenile and as with most blood parrots I'm sure he's sterile. How much time should I give her with her eggs before removing them, should she not eat them ?
