I've been looking through the freshwater profiles on this site and have been thinking about getting some killifish. I recently read that some are 'annual' though, and was wondering if anyone had a list of ones that weren't. I'd like to look into getting some that would last longer than a year.

killifish life span

Hello; My understanding of killifish is that they live in places where the pools of water they live in form during a rainy period and dry up again after a while. Their survival strategy is to mature quickly and leave behind eggs that can survive in the moist ground until the next rainy period. Some time ago I tried to keep some but was not able to collect eggs successfully. I am not sure how long you can keep them alive. As with most things, there may be exceptions and varieties that live a longer time may exist. I have recently moved into a place where I can keep many tanks. I hope to try to raise these fish again. The day may come (probably already has started) when these fish are not able to exist in the wild due to habitat destruction. I hope someone who knows will post the information. Some years ago there was a killifish group in the Cincinnati Ohio area.
