My godfather has a Koi Pond, but he has well over 50 Koi in there and needs to get rid of some. I was thinking about taking 1 of his 1"-2" Koi fry (they breed like crazy). Would 1 Koi fish alone be ok in a 30 gallon for a while until I can upgrade again and get a bigger tank for it?? He has new fry every summer. And if I do get the Koi, how big of a tank would I need as a min?? I tried looking it up, but I get a different answer in every site.

Koi need PONDS. Though a small koi would do ok in a 30 before it's big ebough (5/6 inches) to move into a pond, they should not under any circumstances be kept in a tank permanently. They just don't make tanks/aquarium filters big enough.

I would suggest your godfather sells on the koi fry to a shop. Might get some money for them.

honestly kira he is 100% right, and if you had a 30g tank why spend all that space on a single 1" fish, honestly a 2" gold fish needs 30g.... just 2" needs 30g that means no other fish just the one fish.....

I think you do need a 30g tank but i would love to see you set something fun up in it, not waste it on a pond fish..... lets talk about other fish that interest you :)

loaches are freaking sweet, cichlids are really fun, what else do you like?

Super happy!!!!

I found out that my dad wants to put a fish tank (MINE!!)_ in the living room and one of his buddies is selling a 150 gallon with a stand. How many Koi can I put in there?? Or should I make it a tropical tank and move all of my current fish into that tank??

I have to agree with the other posters...

Koi need 500 gallons for each, I think...some say 1,000gals for the first and 500 for the second, but either works, I guess...

My 2 3 year old 12" shortfinned bekko[and 1 is a doitsu] koi live in a 250gal pond and you can tell they need bigger...just awaiting the funds and...kinda waiting to move...

They also like having friends so just 1 is really out of the question..

I disagree with another fish keeper's way of keeping them, but he did have 14 in a 150gal and even though they looked healthy enough, they did NOT look happy and didn't have much moving room[just 1 looked cramped :( ]...

Ok, I'm done with the Koi idea. When I move and get a permanent home I'll make a 4,500 gallon Koi Pond. Like the on my Godfather has!! I'm turning the 150 into either a tropical or a Goldfish tank. Probably Tropical though. I don't want to have to buy a canister filter!!

Yea I suggest what everyone else is saying. My grandparents have koi in there pond and every year they have more fry that they sell to pet shops or people who are just starting ponds etc...But like everyone is saying best just keep in a pond.

Great idea for the 150G tank. I like the loaches or cichlids thought that would be a cool tank.
