there probably one of the best starter shell dwellers, along with multies, i'd say. Most people refer to them as occies, i've never had any myselft, i think orion might of had some at some point but im not sure.

a good start for a 10g would be a male and a couple of females, although sexing is pretty difficult. your best just to have a bare tank with a sand substrate and lots of shells.

Well my brother is keeping 3 so far in his 30g tank. As it was said, a sandy bottom is required with a lot of shells. They stay at the bottom and claim the shells to be their "territory". The dig around the shells and then go into the shells. Good luck with them.

Edit: Shells that have a big enough opening in where they can fit into. They can be any types of shells but I don't know if hermit crab shells might work because they are on the small side.

If you have any gourmet food resturants or food stores around you check for escargot shells, they work great. The resturants might give them to you free, the food stores you can probably buy them in bundles for a few bucks.

Sand doesn't really matter. I've seen white, black, and a mix of white and black kept with shelldwellers.
