I just brought home 2 Leopard Ctenopomas, or Spotted Perch. I have never seen these fish before, but they were so unusual looking I had to try them. Normally I wouldn't buy fish I know nothing about, but the LFS had them with Honey Gouramis so I assumed they would be OK with my Dwarfs (lfs guy didn't know much about them either). I am just curious if anyone out there has kept these fish, and what your experiences are. I'm just curious to learn more about them. Also, how big do they really get? They're about 1" now, I hope they don't get huge and I have to sell them back.

So far, they seem kind of shy but not really afraid of the more active gouramis. The pleco sometimes boots them out of his cave (he's kind of territorial), but no one really picks on them. The gouramis don't bother them (though the nip each other relentlessly). I have read that they are not good for community tanks and shouldn't be kept with other anabantids (sp?)- and I don't understand why this would be so.

Sadly it will outgrow a 10gal but not for awhile. They get to be 4"-5" i bought 2 a few yrs. ago that were mislabled "leaf fish". They are african anabantoids & are meat eaters. Guppys & like-sized fish are not safe with this fish, check out the size of the mouth on this fish, it's HUGE for the size of the fish. It's shy in behavior but still a preditor. Have fun....Rich

Thanks for the info! I guess I'll enjoy them while I can. Maybe I'll have a larger tank by the time they get too big. I see what you say about their mouths- when they yawn, it looks like a funnel!
