Light making too much heat?

My husband fixed a 4' light for my tank and we set it up last weekend. However, it's rather hot and I think it's heating up my tank water. How do you mitigate the heat your lights produce and still get added light in your tank?

You might also consider a simple clip on type fan set to blow air across the light. This should disapate the heat of the light enough that it is no longer a concern. Of course, you'll want to keep an eye on your heater to make sure that it is not coming on too often. That would indicate that you're drawing heat off the tank causing the heater to work harder... and costing more in electricity.

How hot...

I had the heater set to 78 and the tank was up to about 81-82. Still acceptable, but barely. It then cools down when I turn the light off, which isn't a good thing to have the temp going up and down all the time like that.

What type of light fixture is it? If it is a hood type you could just raise the hood up an inch or two by proping it up on a piece of wood on each end of the fixture. You could also hang the fixture from the ceiling over the tank with a small space between the two. I have a 90 gallon tank with a 6 light custom made fixture hung over it and do not have a heat problem because I removed the ballasts from the fixture and mounted mounted them in a metal plate that is hung on the wall behind the tank so the heat goes into the room and not into the tank. Email me if you want more info.

get a muffin fan... put a thermal switch in series with
the power.. .when it get hot... it closes and cools it
off.....
My PC sure heat up my 150g tank... so I was considering
doing that... but so far I just quit using them and put
some lesser lights under the canopy.... (still lazy)
