I have two 15 watt fluorescent tube lights for my 6 gallon tank as I am keeping glossos.

I heard from some people that this does not necessary give me 30 watts for total light output... so is it really true? Am I not getting 5w/gallon?

Well that depends on the style of light, if they're the screw in spiral flourescents. Then no due to the shape of the bulb, you're at best getting 50% (and that is with a perfect reflector - something you wont even get at NASA) Even with the standard flourescent tubes, you're still not getting 30w because half the light is getting blasted up to the canopy. There are flourescents which only the bottom half produces light, but they're expensive and you still loose some light.

I'm not a mathematician or a physicist so I can't tell you for sure, lets just say less than 30w. To improve that, you can add a good reflector (Mylar is often recommended - Chip bags are my favorite source) A high quality store bought reflector can do even better (AH Supply www.ahsupply.com has a good one)

Overdriving flourescents - A topic I've been researching lately. Basically its like overclocking a PC. The way you do it, is to get a multi - bulb ballast, then hook it up with 2 of more leads to each bulb. There's a really good article about it at theplantedtank.(net? org? can't remember)
