I have a 15 watt all-glass aquarium bulb in right now (came with tank and plastic hood) and want to go to flourscent lighting to help my plants. What kind of bulb should I buy? Or how do I figure out what I need?

what kind of plants do you have? some low-light plants would probably do fine in your tank as it is now. is your 15watt bulb an incandesenct or flurescent bulb?

is your tank a tall or long 20? on my 20-long i have a 65w 6700K power compact bulb which has been great. the bulb gives me over 3wpg.

i would suggest spending a little bit of $$ for a power compact hood. mine was about $50 on bigals and make a huge difference in the overall look in the tank from a regular fluro strip. and its nice to have plants now!

take a look at some of the stickies in the aquatic plant forum.

regular flourescent bulbs are long and skinny and are plugged in on both sides.

if you want more lighting you can either get another hood to place over your tank, or buy a whole new compact flourescent canopy.
