Little Update

#1
Not sure how long it's been since I've been around here..., just a few months I suppose. I am sure my threads are somewhere around here, but I'll just post the update here :]

The 40 gallon:
As usual I definitely have far more fish than I probably should in there (but I reduced the amount of fish in the 36 gallon!). I still have the Silver Tip Tetras, Panda Cories, Kuhli Loaches, Yoyo Loach, Von Rios, Rummy Nose Tetras and I recently added the Cardinal Tetras.

As for the Cardinals I believe 2 or 3 of them have ich, I think it's ich. It's the typical white spots, it hasn't gotten worse and they have had it since I went on hiatus from the forum. Nobody else has caught it in the 36 where they originally were or in the 40 where they are now. All I know is that I can actually see them and I was really tempted to just get rid of them.

Besides the Cardinals the tank is doing amazing, plants are doing pretty decent, still waiting for them to fully get going. I don't think the tall stick like plants I bought will survive since when I came home after buying them found that the lady at broken all the stems, I attempted to just fix them up and plant them. They are still alive which is good, just not sure how long it will last. The log still turns the water brown as you can see, I actually did a water change a bit ago so it isn't as brown as it gets, I've pretty much begun to embrace the tannins.

The 36 gallon:
There is seriously ALWAYS something going on with this tank. Everything was fine and dandy, had fed the fish, watched them then went down into the garage after turning the fish light out. Seriously everything was FINE crystal clear water, just beautiful. Then I come back up and am standing in the kitchen and feel like something is wrong, I'm looking around then look at the tank and it looks cloudy. So I turn the light on and I see all of my shrimp at the top gasping for air then all the Cardinals (when they were in there) gasping for air in the back and lifelessly swimming. The fake Julii Cories didn't seem to be affected nor did Betta Man. So I took this as an opportunity to finally catch the Cardinals, moved them, saved everything else, did a water change and now it is just the 4 Juliis in that tank because I can't catch them, my shrimp, dwarf frogs, and Betta Man. To this day I have no idea what went wrong. Oh and I had tested the water during this and nothing was out of whack. I'm thinking maybe the CO2 or filter back-fired and shot garbage into the tank? No idea.

But after all that and minus the bit of ich everything is fine and doing well. And my Betta is obviously spoiled rotten, it's funny to watch him enjoy all 36 gallons to himself.

Now here are some photos:

Welcome back! :) Missed you lots around here, seems a few regulars haven't been posting much recently (myself included for the most part). Why did you disappear?

I LOVE that piece of driftwood! I agree, it looks like pretty typical ich on the cardinals. I'd say just treat as you usually would to absolutely make sure it won't spread to the other fish.

Glad to have you back :) And Merry Christmas/Nadolig Llawen as they'd say in Wales!!

Missed you as well! Before I left people were going on about how there wasn't a lot of activity, seems it's just in spurts. Some peculiar things were going on around here, so I went away for a bit.

It is a pain in the butt piece of driftwood! And WAY too heavy. It's growing a thin layer of green algae on it, which I think is beautiful, hopefully it works out right. Hopefully the ich disappears..

I'm glad to be back so far :D Happy Holidays to you from California!

@laura Mercedes the ADF how adorable, she is almost as adorable as laura the ADF! I need to go nose around and find your post, I'm assuming you have full photos up? :) :) I missed you miss!

Oh, believe me, peculiar things are still happening. Just last week there was the usual drama which for now seems to have died down. I, like you, didn't post for a good while and it was a welcome break.

Forgot to ask, they're flame tetras in the first few pics, right? They're honestly the fish that got me into tropicals, and yet I've NEVER kept them! I saw an illustrated picture of them in a book perhaps 12 or 13 years ago and fell in love. Got to get myself some someday!

@Rob Yeah crazy drama stuff is a no go!

Crazy thing is I bought them from a huge school of Silver Tips then a few days into having them, suddenly some were a golden color while others were orange. I had no idea why and hadn't been around here to ask, but that would totally make sense. They are my favorite right now, I really love them, I almost want them in my 36 or just to get more and put them in the 36.

Thanks BigP!

@Fishman, nice to see you around :) I'm sorry to hear about all the chaos, sometimes life just gets in the way! It will be okay though :) You can always just get a little tube and blow some air into the water yourself it wouldn't be pure oxygen of course, but a little bit and it'd help. Either way, I wish you luck and hope that it works out :)

I see what you mean looking at the full tank shot, I wonder, male/female perhaps? Just have to wait and see if they breed when the plants thicken up!

I think the atlantic has a lot to do with what we call our fish haha, when I joined the forum I had no idea what "black skirt tetras" were, googled them to find they're what we call black widow tetras! I guess it depends where you're from when it comes to popular names, just as it does with units of measurement - of course you all use US gallons, we use litres over here. Though it has really helped with my conversion skills! I almost never use google to work out tank sizes now :p

I love a lot of the terminology used on your end of the world, probably because I read a lot of literature by authors who are from there and it's fabulous. I was actually having a fun conversation about the UK and Pancake Day, which came up from talking about pancakes and crumpets this morning.

The metric system is so much easier, but I'm not a skilled mathematician so can hardly do the system over here. It's more like "Hey that looks like a good tank size! I could put lots of fish in there!" Haha

I can tell the different between my male and female Flame Tetras/Von Rios .. Flame Rios! :) but not the Silver Tips...I certainly do not want them to breed though, I'm fully over stocked as it is (as usual..)

Do you have pancake day over in the US? I'd guess not, I gather they're much more of an every day thing across the atlantic! I do have a friend on the same course as me who's also in the operas (I swear, my singing teacher wants us to be together.. Papageno and Papagena in The Magic Flute, Ottone and Drusilla in L'incoronazione di Poppea, and a couple who elope in her own opera creation.. but that's another story!) who's from Cape Cod, MA, so I have a little bit of exposure to American terminology, but pretty much the only one that sticks out for me is the use of "fall" instead of autumn! Maybe she plays it down?

I must admit though.. I do love crumpets.. :) Sounds like a pretty random conversation!!

MK, do you have flapjacks? I always thought "flapjacks" were pancakes until recently when I ran into a discussion on them and found they were completely different. I made some, although I didn't have the same syrup that the UK does, and they were very easy and good!

We don't have Pancake Day (that I know of...)! Some areas have Shrove Tuesday here or there is Mardi Gras, I'm not super familiar with what names are used most commonly around here..

Flapjacks look like large granola bars! It was a random conversation but not super random, it's because I was making pancakes this morning, which were delicious with honey mmm.

However, my update post has gone random :0

Yes, it is random, but it is well worth knowing about flapjacks and it took me most of a life time to get acquainted. In spite of all the Christmas cookies I made, that picture still looks good MK!

This is the best looking tetra tank I've seen in a while. You're making me almost with I'd gone with rummy nose instead of just regular neons in my tank. That's a nice piece of wood you have there, too.

Thanks Ryanoh, so funny you point that out I didn't even realize it was mostly tetras LOL, I just go and pick fish I like (which I already had the Rummies and Cardinals in another tank). That darn driftwood is nice, but a pain with the tannins. My SAE found a hole he lives in, you can peek in and just see him looking out and my Yoyo claimed the little separate log in front of the big log on the left. Pretty entertaining.

The only struggle right now is plants, I was so hoping I'd have better luck with sand, but I know it's a hectic substrate. I can grow the floating plant like no other, but since the sand is so compacted the roots cannot grow out. To top it off the lady had already killed these plants. Ferts aren't an issue I do add those.

So any suggestions on some types of plants, maybe I could attempt some anubias attached to the driftwood, I just don't want to cover the wood up too much nor am I the best with anubias.
