I know this might be a dumb questing for sum, but is live rock a real big necessity in a salt water tank if all i have is fish and no anemone or any other kind of coral.

From what I understand pancho, it is tough to determine a good ratio and depends on the quality and density of the rock. Less dense rocks will weigh less but should contain more/different good hitchhikers. Most try to get between 1 to 2 lbs/gal but it is based on how full you want your tank. To save on funds you can use base rock for the bottom layer to support island or range you create with your rock. Now, I don't yet have a tank running, but this is just what I have come up with after researching this same subject for some time. Good luck on tank.
