Biological control is something that has to be done very carefully. Introducing any species into a different biotope can cause problems if it competes for food with other species, or if it is predatory on other species. There have been several biological disasters where something was introduced to get rid of some kind of parasite, and ended up taking over.

These loaches have a bonus in that they provide food for the farmers, too.

Just remember: Never release fish from your aquarium into a stream, pond or lake.

I should try and get my mosquito larve to turn into the real deal. Then I can unleash them into Northern Ireland then Britain and finally THE WORLD muahahaha. Or I could just feed them to my fish :). Actually getting fish to take care of this problem a pretty good idea taking in mind what lotus said. If it doesnt effect the system the it's good stuff (well apart from the mozzies).

Lotus, isn't that the truth! You should see the mess that the US Army Corps of Engineers has created in Florida by bringing in all sorts of exotic species to take care of various "problems." From exotic trees which suck out every last drop of water in the soil to frogs and anoles (lizards) which pushed the native animals out of their environments. It's really quite a mess down here because of it, and it's virtually impossible to put the genie back into the bottle now.

Are those the same thing as Dojo Loaches? and I agree mudracer, they aren't ugly!!! I think they are pretty darn cool lookin - very exotic/oriental looking in my opinion, what with their long mustaches and all ;)
