Hehe, just a tip - don't stir up the sand :) If you feel its really necessary - get some MTS snails (Malaysian trumpet snails) They'll do it for you - without the huge mess.

It will settle, turn down your filter if possible, and let it be.

I have a african cichlid in there. He's the only occupant.

I didnt turn off the filter. I let it run full blast. I want it to clear up asap. I dont mind it messing up the impeller. Because the sand particles floating around is too small to do any real damage. And Whisper impellers are pretty durable.

I have two tanks with sand as the substrate. With the 20 I had problems when i first set it up with clouding, It went down after a few days. When I set up the 55 I ran a hose from the tap and had it pour over some rocks, real slow. Then when it started filling up I started to turn up the water. I havent had anyproblmes sinse. As long as you can find an area in the tank to pour the water on so it wont stir you shoudlnt have anyproblems. I have a few snails and cories that help move the sand around, its sure helps!

My Solution

I had the exact same problem.

I built a rather large centrifuge and mounted the tank in it. Spinning at approximately 6000 rpms settled it in about 23 minutes. Of course, I removed the fish first. Just so you know, I removed about 20% of the water first, so it wouldn't splash out during spin-up and spin-down.

If anyone wants blueprints, I could try and draw them up.
