how many pounds are you looking for? how big is your tank?
and why are you against having it shipped?

you know its ALL shipped at one point to get up to the north east....
if your getting under 30pounds just go to your local fish store
over that and your better off buying in bulk online.

HOWEVER, if I was ever gonna do it again, I'd buy dead rock, and seed it with garf grunge to turn it all live. That stuff ROCKS!!!!

You can get 30 pounds of florida, aquacultured rock for $133 shipped to your door from http://www.gulf-view.com

You also could get fiji rock wholesale from http://www.eastcoastclams.com/ $2.25 a pound in a 40-50lb box. This is shipped air freight, and you would have to pick it up at your local airport. Depending on your location, shipping ranges from $.25-$.60 a lb. These are the best places I've found for live rock on the internet.

Your best bet, though, is to be patient and find a local reefer breaking down his tank. I picked up 70 lbs of live rock, 2 clownfish, a sixline wrasse, a yellow watchmen goby, a couple leather corals, a cup coral, and esv b-ionic supplements for $50. I had to drive an hour for it all, but it was well worth it. I previously picked up 35 lbs of live rock for $50 from another reefer. All together, less than a dollar a pound. See if there are any local reef clubs or post a message to reef central's forums. That's where I found out about my purchases. Cheers!

Little Shop of Pets

I've heard good things about them, and I'd definately saw they're worth checking out.

Located at 2454 Lafayette Rd, Portsmouth, NH. They get weekly shipments of live rock.

Also, you may want to check out the Boston Aquarium Society meetings. They have an auction after the speaker at each monthly meeting. (I'm going for the first time tonight, I'll let you later if they have live rock...)

(3rd Monday of each month at the Boston Aquarium., see www.bostonaquariumsociety.org for more info)

dead rock is just dead base rock with no life on it.
Its best cuz your not gonna get any bad algaes, no apistaes and no other bad critters, garf grunge is basically a bag full of good critters and algaes and you use it to see your rock and sand so it comes to life.
