I've got to say I'm a little disapointed with Marineland. I have had some of their older Penguin filters for years and am running a Penguin Mini on the 10gal right now. I love it, quiet as a mouse.

Now, I just bought some new tanks, and with them newer Penguin filters, the 200. I can't believe how loud these things are. Its ridiculous, I mean, I'm not even sure I could sleep with these things running at night.

My girlfriend has the new Penguin 100, and that one is quiet, so I know its not all the new ones. Are all large filters like this noisy, or is it just the new larger penguin filters?

I have that same filter on my 25 gallon tank. It's normally very quiet except for when the water level get's low and then it's only the water return sound "splashing" that makes any noise. What "kind" of noisy is it? Clickity clacky? Grinding? Sometimes I take it apart and rinse the impeller and pick the cat hair/my hair that somehow gets into the tank and get wound into the impeller and then it makes a grinding/buzzing noise. Rinse it under HOT water, and put everything back together and it's fine again.

Although I strongly agree with the superiority :))) of AC's, sometimes you can just get a reject. Don't ask me why, but I find that two different examples of the same model can make some very different noise levels.

I'd first try to bring it back and exchange it for another, and try that. If that doesn't work, I'd go Lotus' route and call Marineland.

by the description of how bad it is, sopunds more like a problem that needs to be fixed rather than noise that should be expected from it.

Is it setup correctly? How long has it been running? As lotus said I think aa call to Marineland would do the trick if a replacement part is needed or bring it back for a replacement

I guess its just kinda a whirling noise, from the motor that I hear. I took it apart but it was clean. I bought it with some tanks I recently bought from this guy (who took good care of his tanks) and I think the filter had been running no more than a year (it still looks very new and clean).

If I go over to my penguin mini, I have to put my ear pretty close to it to hear the motor churning. The 200 on the other hand, I can hear it out in the hall.
