i woke up this morning and took a shower, got the kids up and gave them breakfast, and set them down to the morning cartoons, then went to do my morning tank inspections, all the tanks were good accept my jewel chiclids, the female has eaten all the fins and most of the tail off the male, and he has some large wounds on his side.

they were fine last night, the female was a bit stressed, she had lost some color and was laying in her usual spot with the babies, but she was getting very violent with the gravel, i just assumed she was digging another burrow for the babies. ...but i dont know what to do with the male! the new tank is not cycled yet, and i have no where else to move him! what do i do? and why is my female suddenly killing the male? they were doing great together tasking turns with the babies, sleeping together and living happily! what do i do?

This often is a problem of the female being over protective of the fry and seeing the male as a threat. The best response to this is the seperate the male. For now I would sugest a tank divider do that she can not get to the male untill another tank is setup for him.

i had to take him out he is not looking like he is going to make it, he is in a 2qt.pitcher with an air stone right now, the only meds i have are marycyn2 and salt, but i dont think either of those are going to help.it is just really weird that she chose to attack him after bein with him for so long, and they were doing really well together no agression at all , im guessing she was beating him up all night, i will post a pic as soon as get my 2.5 gallon tank setup as a quarentine for him, is there any meds that will help him?

try melafix. When I worked in a pet store we use to use it on the beat up oscars and it really helped with their wounds.
Good Luck with him! I hope he makes it! Please keep us updated.

he is doing a little better today, he is still not swimming around, but is eating, he is still in bad shape and in danger of going to fiushy heaven but i am hoping that is not what will happen., the female seems much calmer now that i have removed him though so maybe it was for the better that they are separate.

well i was wrong, he is not doing better, he has a major fungus growth on his tail, it looks like it is fuzzy and very thick, he cant keep his body even, his back end wont stay donw and his face is stuck in the gravel, i just cant bring myself to put him down, and i dont have any clove oil or alchohol, what do i do? should i turn off the light and let him go naturally? or try the frezzer method? although my hubby wouldnt be too impressed about a dead fish in the frezzer.
