nitrite should be Zero how do you measure it? don't use strip, go to LFS they have kits to measure it or get liquid freshwater testing kit, its pricey but last long and worth it.

Nitrite is what kills fish (slowly but surely), do you have fish in the tank? did you cycle the tank? i suggest you keep doing 50-60% water change every day or every other day if you have fish there.

firstly, check about nitrogen cycling if you haven't cycled your tank.

To lower nitrate, suction the gravel with a turkey baster or a vacuum. Also, nitrate is DEADLY so get it out of there ASAP. I lost my favorite to nitrate poisoning...

Also, nitrate quickly converts to ammonia. I use a sponge filter to help eliminate it. If you don't have one on hand, I would reccomend moving your fish to another tank temporarily and give your main tank a good cleaning, maybe a 50 percent.

This sounds like a little bit of confusion between nitrate and nitrate. If nitrite is present, the tank hasn't finished cycling. If fish are already in it, do daily water changes until the cycle is done, and your readings are 0 ammonia, 0nitrite, and 5 or greater nitrate.

Depending on the fish, nitrate is acceptable in under 30 ppm.

Oh, also use some salt. And raise the temperature. Thats what I would do...
:confused::confused:

What effect would salt and temperature have on Nitrite? Salt and temperature adjustments are used to treat ich, namely.

Also...:confused::confused:

Read Beginner FAQ: The Nitrogen Cycle, and ``New Tank Syndrome'' Nitrate does not quickly convert to ammonia. Ammonia slowly converts to nitrate.

It looks like your tank is still cycling. What are your ammonia readings? have they dropped off significantly from a few weeks ago? I remember you were having high ammonia readings several weeks ago. Since you are doing a fish-in cycle and doing massive water changes the cycling process is going to take longer. Be sure you aren't putting any untreated (chlorinated) water into your tank and be sure not to clean or change your filter pads. Once the cycle is complete you will see nitrite drop off virtually over night.
