Hi everybody. I have quite the situation on my hands. First and foremost, i woke up with most of the water in my 55Gal gone. The culprit, my Magnum 350. The intake nozzle had popped out and was spewing water everywhere. Has anyone else had this problem with this particular filter? Anyway my parents want me to do away with it and they want to but me a new one. A couple of HOBs no less. I know not all HOB filters are bad but i doubt they want to spend the money for a good one. I was thinking, Marineland has an HOB filter called Magnum H.O.T., it it any good? I don't know what to do i need some advice. By the way if you need to know how much filtration i need, determined by how many fish i have to the aquarium size. I have 4 Comet goldfish and a Pleco in a 55Gal tank. Anyway if anyone could help me and give me advice about what i should do, i'd be extremely grateful. Thank you in advance. :(

Can't help you on the Magnum 350 as I have never owned one.

You would really be better of to get a canister filter. The XP series from Rena provide some great filtering for little cost compared to other canister filters. They are great for bio filtration, and with goldfish thats a big plus.

You could go with 2 Aquaclear 70's or one Aquaclear 110. Would be the most economical choice in the longrun. If you wish to stick with Marineland, 2 penquin 330's (if you can find them, most likely clearenced out in most chains) or 350's will work. If you don't mind some extra noise the Emperor 400 is an excellent hob filter. Pair it up with a sponge on a powerhead for extra mechanical filtration/ circulation and you have a decent filtration setup for the 55 with those messy goldfish. :D

Buy online for the best deals.

You could just buy the part from Marineland to replace the broken piece. Which part exactly was broken? We have had a Magnum 350 running a 100 gal for 4+ years now and have never had a problem. I just dug out a 350 we weren't using due to a busted magnetic assembly, bought a new assembly and some gaskets, and now my 20 gal is crystal with the added benefit of zero noise. It has raised my tank temp. up a few degrees though..

Do you mean your outlet had come loose and was dumping water?

Some people drill a hole in the intake (under the water line), so that if something goes wrong, the vacuum will be broken and the filter will stop pumping water out. Hopefully someone else can give you better instructions, or you could try a Web search on it.

I have a HOT and I love it. I just got the XP2 from rena, and couldn't be more satisfied. It is the easiest filter I have every worked with to clean. I clean folks tanks that have all kinds of filters, and the XP series are the simpliest and easy to use out there. They are very cheap and affordable to boot.

One of the tanks I care for has a Magnum 350. It is a clumsy filter, IMO. The HOT is a lot easier to use and you lose the chance for parts slipping off and siphoning water.
