Threw mine in the garbage tonight. It was a mini and it was plugged more than it was not. will never buy one again. I put a new aqua clear on. Been using them for years without a problem. I use only sponge and bio balls. I love aqua clears:p

The cotton side of the cartrage got plugged then the water overflowed. As for bio balls. they are tiny strands of plastic rolled up like a ball. They basickly have a ton of area to hold biological bateria. They are common in wet dry filters. I hope i described it so you mightunderstand

I have 5 tanks with 5 marineland filters. Mine all get clogged and need replacement too but not before the recommended 4 week interval. and if they get clogged prematurely its cause i have stirred up alot of debris i just rinse it off and its again good to go.

just for the record.... its purely coincidence that all my tanks have marineland filters, as i only buy used tanks.

so these bioballs just float in your filter and kinda roll around?

what i am asking for is because i have no actual biowheel of anykind, i have a ugf and the hob filters, but i would like to add an actualy wet/dry bio wheel of some sort. I belive there are add on bio wheels for the aquatech filters, but i can't seem to find them.

Um...isn't the cotton side of the cartrige supposed to get plugged? That's you're macrofiltration, right, suppose to capture debris? Then you rinse the cartrige off when you do your water change, and bingo, good as new. I've used marineland fliters my entire career (Have the nice retail systems at my ol' shop!) and have had no problems beyond the basic ones you encounter in any filtration system. Aqua clear sponges can get just as clogged depending upon how much crap you have in your tank. *shrug*

I agree with Colesea (again)
You aren't supposed to buy filter cartridges every 2 weeks like Marineland wants. just take it out and rinse it under the tap. Your biological filtration is in the wheel not on the cartridge.

I rinse them once a week during my water changes. No biggie. The cleaner you keep your tank the less crap to rinse off the cartridge. Takes five seconds, if that. I replace them once a year.
Like Somonas said, the biological filtration is in the wheel. Technically you can run the whole Marineland filter without using carbon or the cartridge at all, those biowheels are really that great. Aqua clear sponges fit in the box just as well as the Marineland cartridges. Macrofiltration is all I use the cartridge for.
