Max wattage for an ecslipse 6 system?

#1
Hi new guy here, i've setup at my gf's place a glass 10gal tank and now want to set up a small one in my room. Thought about saltwater but a bit on the expensive side so i'll stick with freshwater. I've seen these nice little eclipse model acrylic tanks and the 6 gallon eclipse model caught my eye. But the lighting was the chessy incandescents. I was wondering what is the maximum wattage can you screw into that socket? usually there's a label on it warning you. I'm thinking of going to als fish store and buy a 50/50 compact flourescent for it to get that cool bluish lighting like the saltwater tanks get. and with a higher lumen output everything will look nicer with my future setup of fake but colourful corals around.

There's a compact fluorescent that Wal-Mart sells which just screws in to an incandescent hood. I've got 2 mini-bows and a 10G with those now. I like the look. Claims it is full-spectrum.

Full-disclosure: They've only had these bulbs for less than 1 month, so no real idea on how it aids plant growth.

OK, the Wal-Mart bulb is 10 watt, rated at 6500K. It 'looks' like a 25w regular bulb in lumens. It was around $4.00. It's in the pet-aquarium section, not lighting.

Here's the website from the package.

Funny thing is, this particular bulb is not listed or shown anywhere on the website.

Again, I really like the look.

Thanks Bruckm I've finally went to a local petsmart and bought the eclipse 5gal system instead of the 6. The 5 was almost the same as the six except for the back sides tapering off so you can put it into a corner and also the 6 gal model was a new one as it contained only a 8watt flourescent tube instead of a incandescent socket. Kinda limits my choices. the 5gal model has the incandescent and says i'm able to put in a max 11watt flourescent compact, sweet! i'll be picking up a 10watt 50/50 bulb at Als fish store so i can get that slick saltwater tank look to really light up my fake corals in a FW tank. hehe. Oh and the tank isn't bad cause if you want to clean or feed the entire hood hinges open. unlike the tiny opening on the 6 system for feeding and entire removal for a simple filter check. Or else you can totally remove the hood and filter because the plastic railings on the top of the tank that supports the filter can come off with a light tug. its just press fitted around the lip of the tank. if anyone wants to see i can post some pics of how it looks cause i'm not setting it up until next week. I need a nice cheap ikea sidetable to hold it up. $15 CDN and the table top is 2 inches thick. it'll do!

I recently purchased the Eclipse Hex 5, which is an awesome aquarium. I switched out the cheesy incandescent for the 10w fluorescent bulbs (the ones Bruckm mentioned) Wal-mart carries. It's amazing how much nicer the tank looks now that there isn't a yellow glow to everything.

Oh, and I'd be interested in seeing some pictures when you have a chance.

another option is just to buy some media bag fill with ammo-carb and put it in place of the filter on the eclipse 5. Or you have have it with a small filter bag and cut out a piece of foam like so...

the sponge and media bag should fit into that well for the filter easily.

and Bam! that be a very through setup for your filtration. I don't plan on keeping just carbon like that. hmm i'll probably by some stuff next week when i setup my filter so i can show it as a picture. much easier than explaining.
