OK, Ich again. I've read online here and other places until I'm sick.

Let me make sure I understand this stuff by putting it all together and sifting.

Temperature and Salt Method of Treatment
Basically, raise the temperature to 87 is the ideal.
1) This speeds up the metabolic rate of the parasite causing it to enter the water more quickly from the fish. This makes it more susceptible to...?
2) This temperature will also kill (?) the parasite in most instances.

Add salt
1) Add up to 5 TBS/5G
2) Add no more than 3 TBS/5G if Cories, Clown Loaches, Plecos, and SAE's are present. Do this gradually.
3) The salt encourages the fish to produce more slime coat which helps heal and protect them.
4) The higher salt concentration will kill the parasite.
5) How can salt kill Ich if there is also saltwater Ich? Different yet alarmingly similar parasite???

How much of this is correct, if any?

My heater has difficulty hitting 87 precisely. Yesterday when I came home it was 89 and the loaches looked half-dead (on side, etc). I did a water change (25% approx.) and slowly brought it back to 86. Everyone was fine, except one of the SAE's was (and is) MIA. In trying to get it to 87, the heater hit 88. I'm monitoring it whenever possible but apparently hitting the magic 87 is hard for my Rena Cal.

What is the maximum sustained temp for my cories, loaches, plecos, and SAE's?

I'm looking for voices of experience here not theory.

We had our tank at about 86 for more than a week while treating our loaches. They seemed to be fine with the temps. Unfortunately that treatment didn't work for us, and after more spots and more infected fish we resorted to CopperSafe and lower temps.

I know some have better sucess at the salt/heat treatment than we did. I'm just glad we didn't lose any fish to the ich or temps that time.

Ok, thanks.
There's a new (different) quinine-based medication I saw the other day at PetSmart. It's liquid and in a large conditioner sized bottle. If this doesn't work then I will try that. The previous quinine-based medication I used was powder capsules and considerably more expensive. $6.99 for 10 capsules (1/10 gallons) This was $10.00 for 16 ozs.
