I was just wondering if there is any fish that could be considered a mediator fish, you know like a big brother fish who would stop all the fighting? This type of fish would resolve all the questions about what fish to put together. I actually had a gold fish who was like that. There were 8 tiger barbs, 2 rainbow sharks, 2 rosie reds, and 2 algaes. Everything was fine until I got rid of the gold fish now the barbs have taken over and they run the show nipping at everything lol.

Most animals (including humans) are not happy unless in an established pecking order. In your tank, the goldfish was probably the most dominate thing, and any fighting done was a threat to his dominance. When you removed the goldfish, you shook up the establishment, so now the fish will continue to bicker until a new top fish is found.

Tiger barbs in and of themselves are just a very nippy fish, especially when crowded. What size tank do you have? Large schools of tiger barbs are usually recommended so they bicker with each other, and not tank mates. An overzealous school in too small a space will have that aggression boil over into fin nipping others.

why don't u try one red tail shark? I've noticed that he chases them every time they invade his territory, and keep them in check from nipping my more docile fish. i guess he keeps them in check, and try getting one very large tiger barb, and then the other a little smaller, so there is clear distinction between who is the dominant tiger barb.
