Medication + Bio Bag = bad combo?

Hi, I have a 10 gallon tank with a whisper 10 filter. The tank is currently cycling (1 week in, amonia at .75 ppm after a 50% water change. My platy has a red sore so I'm treating it with melafix (which isn't supposed to harm my existing bacteria... but we'll see about that). Anywho, my filter uses bio bags which contain carbon as well as it has a foam insert that water filtered from the bio bag must flow through before it is released. The medication says to remove carbon filtering if possible. Should I remove the bio bag all together? Will the carbon remove the med?

What I've done so far is remove the bio bag from the filter but stick it into the tank (so I don't lose too much of its bacteria) and where the bio bag was I stuffed the foam filter from my aqua clear mini (which I don't use because it's too damn loud) for now until I get an answer. Is the bio bag bad for melafix? Should I take it out of the tank all together? Is the filter I have in place sufficient for now?

I didn't know if this should go into the disease or equipment folder (I'm new here) and both seem like a relavent place to post, thanks in advance!

Welcome to the tank ;)

Mela-Fix probably won't harm your bacterial colony. Unfortunately, it probably won't do much for your platy, either. It is more of a general tonic that seems to have some beneficial effects on torn fins and the like.

A red sore is more indicative of a bacterial infection that will require treating with antibiotics. These can have negative effects on beneficial bacteria, also.
