We obviously have very different laws in the UK from those in the US which allows our NA friends to buy stuff containing antibiotics to treat various disorders. Can anyone in the UK recommend any treatments for bloat that work or do we need to visit a vet to get this stuff?

Well - you're going to love this next bit........

Nothing on the box - nothing on the tube of tablets - nothing on a Google search.

The Google search does come up with a more detailed description of what it treats, but seems to omit a name for the active ingredient. perhaps an elbow in the ribs to the makers would provide a result.

Othet than that - flagellated protozoacide is all I can say.

mmmmm, that's interesting .... might be just placebo then?

I guess it's a good thing that we can't just go dumping antibiotics into our fishtanks willy nilly, god knows where all these antibiotics are going.

It did occour to me that a 'wet vet' might not be that far out of the equation - a simple email (perhaps with supporting pic of fish) and a 'fly-by' to pick up a script may not break the bank - especially when you consider what an off the shelf med costs anyway.

hi
ive had a similar prob taffy...forums keep recommending maracyn & other meds we just cant get here....although i did have some lovely people in the us who offered to send me some but i dont know what customs would think. i hate the way that a lot of uk fish meds (interpet esp ) dont always tell you the exact ingredient in their stuff....i like to know what im dosing with before i start...i know i could ring them but why dont they just put this info on the packet. i had a nasty experience about 10 months ago with interpets fin rot & fungus med, it anaethetised our tiger barbs for 4 days......no im not kidding they were completely zonked for 4 days. i looked up the ingredient on the net (for once interpet HAD put the meds ingredient on the box) & found out to my horror the stuff phenyoxyeth an something is used as an anaesthetic for fish but is not licenced anymore as it was too dangerous to find the safe dose..... so we had an answer to our barbs sleepy state & kept on with water changes/aeration etc & thank god they recovered after their deep sleep... now this incident was purely OUR fault...other half overdosed tank by mistake.......but a lot of interpets stuff has no info as to ingredients at all. and cetainly not much in the way of warnings..im not blaming them for our stupid mistake but surely they should give as much info as they can on all their meds.
apparently some people here have had luck by visiting vets & explaining their problem ( bit expensive though - its not like you can take your fish along that would probably kill them not the disease... & there are a couple of tropical fish vet experts here but where...how to contact them i have no idea.

Thanks for sharing that millym, I think your experience is a good example of why such drugs are not placed into the hands of complete novices. It's a bit frustrating but, taking the larger picture into account, I would rather have the British Law in place and Joe Public protected from itself. After all, you can go to a vet and pay for the drugs if you feel your stock are worth it. You're more likely to get a proper guide to the correct administration and dosage from a vet than if you just pick it up of the shelf in a pet store.

prevention is better than the cure
Amen to that brother Tim but isn't the finest fish keeper in the land also going to encounter sickness? I think we agree that we're better off without the medications available in the US, so how would you treat a fish with bloat?

(I had this particular cyprichromis for over 10 months, none of the other cyps or other species in the tank seem to be affected.)

so how would you treat a fish with bloat?
First thing I would do is treat for internal parasites, probably using my old faithful treatment "Garlic" if this does not have any affect then move onto Epsom salts, if still feeding one granule in a squashy Pea will usually move blockages, if not into the water column.
Last thing is to treat for internal bacterial problems, again Garlic will be very helpful, if all else fails remove fish to hospital tank and use Metronidazole.

ive done quite a bit of research on garlic...looks good as a starter for lots of tank probs...but how the hell do you get the finned ones to ingest the stuff??? ive tried soaking flake in minced garlic & chucking it in...well ive never seen so many disgusted looking fish in my life...even the tank piggies(tiger barbs) were spitting this stuff out & not going back for more.and our shrimps that go for anything when encountering the garlic rolled it around for a little while before sending it spinning away to a far corner.
any clues tips???
thanks
