I’m temporarily housing 30 or so 1-9 inch gold fish in an indoor aquarium while I get the pond up and healthy. There is also a large channel catfish. A few days ago I noticed a few lighter pigmented spots on one of the fish. Didn’t look anything like ich that I have seen. Today I see many fish with this problem. Still doesn’t look like ich. On one very dark colored fish it almost appears as if the scales are gone in those spots. They are irregular and randomly placed and still not on all the fish. None on the 9 inch one yet.

My ? is what is this? The catfish has been picking them off smallest ones first for a while after the lights are off. Could these be more injury than disease? I have no experience with goldfish and they aren’t my first choice, but it was a package deal-free pond and equipment but have to take the fish as well.

Next ? would it be better for the guys to just put them into the pond now away from the catfish and hope that they are hardy enough to weather through the cycle?

wish I could but no dig camera. I tried to borrow the one from work but the quality was sooo bad I couldn't even see the big details of the fish! The lighter pigmented areas are between a few mm to 1-2 cm. They are not raised, but more concave. Honestly looks like the scales are gone. If this is the case, do they grow back? I'm quite niave on the missing scale scene...

thanks
