Depends on what type of cichlid you are talking about. Some can be kept in community, some not. Most of the time you want to have fish that they can't fit into their mouth with them though.

Well its not basically fitting into the mouth, cichlids will beat their enemy to death and maybe not just swallow them.

Some can. Really no Africans can go into a community tank, unless its an african community. You do have your more peacful cichlids though: Rams, apistos, discus, sometimes angels, checkerboard cichlids, keyholes...etc...

My dad used to keep a 90 gallon and he was succesful at keeping a Jack Dempsey and Firemouths with Tinfoil Barbs and Diamond Tetra. But them again Tinfoil Barbs are real fast and the Diamond tetra was kind of a mean one.

this is a tricky one - all of what's being said above is quite true - but several of us have broken the rules with some success - but if you want to play the odds, then don't mix African with American

Tank size is a big factor - another trick is not to mix fish of the same size (they fight harder, whereas if it's no competition, there's unlikely to be one)

Lots of hiding spots to cater for all helps, and don't go for the big ones that are known to be aggressive

Africa, Central America and South all have cichlids that grow to several feet in lengh and will eat anything, also both continents have cichlids that grow to 2 inches and are great community fish.
You can't say africans yes, S Americans no, or vice versa. You have to research each individual fish, to find out what type water it prefers, how large it ets, and it's disposition to other fish.
Apart from a few cases bucket rules don't work very well at all
