Mollys to cycle?

Can Mollys be used to cycle a tank. This is for a tank that is to be set up at a youth center. The director asked me, but I didn't know. One of the employees there has an over abundance of them as her's just had another brood.

Me, I don't think that I want live bearers for just that reason.

If you're going to use fish, it really doesn't matter which kind of fish you use....

i'd go for a hardier fish, like danios

Mollies should be OK. Just make sure he knows how to test the water (or test it for him) and to do water changes.

If the mollies have been bred in someone's tank, they're usually much hardier than fish from the store.

Mollys are hit and miss in hardiness.

But still, a bottle of ammonia and a few weeks patience are a lot cheaper and a lot less cruel to the fish.

I suggested Danios for them if they must cycle w/fish. I will suggest doing a fishless cycle. I don't know how far that will go, as I don't know if any one person will be responsible for the tank.
