Hi all.

I've got this african driftwood called mopani for my new tank. Have been soaking it in a seperate container of water for about a week now, trying to get all the colour stain out of it (it turns clear water kind of tea coloured).

Anybody know how long it should take before the wood will be ok to put in the tank without colouring the water?

I had the same thing happen with my mopani wood. All I did was put it in the bath and run the hot shower over it for 5 mins, then put it in a big bucket and poured boiling water in till it covered the wood. I left it to cool enought that I could put my hand in, rinsed it off again and put it in my tank. Water slightly coloured but that works fine for the piranhas. Carbon in your filter will help remove some of the tannin from the water. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the info tramca. The water is getting clearer each time I change it (water in the container). Still got a few weeks cycling to do too, so hopefully it should be clear by then. If not, can always get the carbon for my filter :)

Just make sure you test the water in your tank after you put it in, as the tannins can lower your pH a little. It shouldn't be to a dangerous level, but if you notice your pH dropping, that is probably the cause.

The tannins are OK for the fish, it might just be you that's bothered by the slightly brown looking water. :)
