My big fish needs a buddy

Almost 3 years ago, an old roomate came home with 5 feeder fish for my African-clawed frogs (they live submerged in water) and one feeder survived and grew so big it almost looks like a Koi! All of the frogs have since passed and now my fish is living alone in a 55 gallon tank. It's not showing any signs of slowing down so I'd like to get another fish b/c I think he/she is lonely now without his/her frog buddies (they played quite a bit and the frogs even rode on the fish's back!) but I'm wondering if I buy a regular-sized goldfish or feeder, will my big guy eat him or will he last to grow the same size??? Any info on compatability would be helpful, thanks!
