Thanks to a faulty Whisper heater, my best fish, my first clown loach, is dead. He ingested a piece of black mesh and died a day later, hiding in the driftwood. His mouth was all red and his barbels had come out as if he were trying to spit things up... the previous night I saw him expelling white stuff from his mouth, but didn't think too much of it since he was fine elsewise.

Sorry to hear that, I have those same heaters, and both have the black mesh coming off, maybe I should be worried. Did you actually see the loach eat it?

I've seen the loaches nibbling on the heater after it stopped working, but at that time I had no idea it was peeling off. The day I took it out a few hours later I saw the loach with his barbels extended and spewing out white stuff, as if he had something caught in his mouth.

I can't prove it was the heater, but I suspect it as there was nothing else wrong with the tank and every other fish was totally healthy.
