I have 24 fish in my tank, including a male guppy.  He keeps trying to mate with my male and female gold mollies. He kept harrassing them, so today i bought a female guppy for him to occupy himself with.  He has barely noticed her and is still chasing my two gold mollies around like crazy.  why is this happening???? Why wont he mate with his own kind instead of another fish.. and a male!! Can someone please help me. Thanks. :-[

Not sure what size tank you have, but I would have done was remove the male guppy to a q-tank with the new female, and I suggest you get 1 or 2 more females. He then will learn to like them instead. Also 2 or 3 will prevent him from chasing the only female , giving the new females each a break from him.

If you have no q-tank(  :(  ) , I would add 1 to 3 more females(if your tank and its biological load can handle anymore), he will eventually see the female guppys and stay with them.

Okay...have you ever seen a large, dominate female molly boss other fish around a tank? Doesn't that remind you of some typical pushy females in your life? Hmm...I can name several in mine that would match that discription. Oh, and the chuckles we have in class when we discuss female behavior during their "cycle." Female hormonal behavior seems to cross species....and a certain "derogatory" term stems from it...

Just trying to be fair and bash my own sex, does that make you feel better? Hey, if you want to bash females, go ahead, I wouldn't call anybody who did a sexist. Heck, I'd laugh and agree with them. Trust me, I can bash women with the best of you men, I am, after all, one of the "choosen" few women who are permitted to be "one of the guys."  Probably because I'm just intelligent enough to have conversations with but not attractive enough to date and therefore totally unthreatening.  Most men laugh and agree, certain things are definately on their minds more often than not, and most of them are more than a little too eager to share the details....

Just be prepared, I do volley back. And some of the returns should probably be exchanged only between mature individuals. So...

give it your best<G>

i've had a very long experience with guppies, since i was 7? thats whne i have a huge tank with countless guppies, no filter, nothing haha i remember those days in malaysia.  Use kept well water, clean the tank 100% and just couple of natural decorations with COUNTLESS beautiiful guppies.  ANyways if you want to breed your guppies that bad at least ratio of 2females to 1male.  Guppies are livebearers so are mollies etc, they tend to recognize each toherbetter than others, even tho ive seen this happen before its natural. Hey sometimes nature doesnt go its own course. haha..gl
